Information regarding Air Traffic Controller (ATC) Tier 2 Evaluations

  • Graves conducts evaluations with individuals applying to be an Air Traffic Controller (ATC) and who have been referred for a Tier 2 Evaluation by the FAA.
  • Evaluations include an in depth psychosocial clinical interview, measurement of personality and emotional functioning, a record review, and a final report which will be sent directly to the FAA. The specific domains measured will depend on your specific case, as well as on the requirements set forth by the FAA.
  • The first step in the evaluation process is typically an introductory phone call to discuss the evaluation process and schedule the evaluation.  You will then be enrolled in our patient portal, through which you will complete new patient paperwork and receive an extensive Personal History Questionnaire which includes necessary information regarding your current and historical functioning. The evaluation will be conducted in-person with Dr. Graves in her office in Burr Ridge, IL and typically takes 4-5 hours of direct face-to-face evaluation time.

Information regarding Fitness for Duty Evaluations

  • A psychological FFDE is a formal, specialized examination of an incumbent employee that results from (1) objective evidence that the employee may be unable to perform a defined job safely or effectively and (2) a reasonable basis for believing that the cause may be attributable to a psychological condition or impairment. As such, an FFDE is considered a “medical” examination under the terms of the Americans with Disabilities Act.1 The central purpose of an FFDE is to determine whether the employee is able to perform safely and effectively his or her essential job functions.
  • Considerations: Referring an employee for an FFDE is indicated when there is an objective and reasonable basis for believing that the employee, as a result of a psychological condition or impairment, (1) may be unable to perform one or more essential job functions or (2) poses a direct threat to themself or others.
  • Referral Process: Please call for additional details. Referrals for fitness for duty evaluations should come from the employer.
