Psychological assessments can be anxiety provoking; however, we hope the following information answers your questions and lets you know what to expect when arriving for your first testing session.
Dr. Graves and Dr. Cinquegrani are Licensed Clinical Psychologists who conduct psychological assessments to help further explore an individual’s strengths and challenges in their cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. We provide psychological testing for all age ranges.
Psychological testing can often help with diagnostic clarification, treatment planning/recommendations, school accommodations, and can assist with further medical treatment by your medical provider. There are many different types of assessments, ranging from emotional, cognitive, academic, and neuropsychological. We tailor each assessment to meet the needs of our individual patients; therefore, after our first initial session Dr. Graves and Dr. Cinquegrani determine what assessments will be utilized.
What does a typical psychological assessment consist of?
Initially, there will be a 50-minute clinical interview with one of our Licensed Clinical Psychologists. If the assessment is for a child under the age of 18, the initial clinical interview will be a time for parents to meet with either Dr. Graves or Dr. Cinquegrani to discuss reasons for the assessment, concerns, and important background history.
After the initial clinical interview, there will be one to two testing appointments. These appointments typically last 3 hours, and are scheduled in the morning and/or the early afternoon to ensure we obtain the highest level of performance from the patient. During each of these testing sessions, different empirically-based and standardized tests will be utilized. Different activities, ranging from designing blocks, answering true-false questions, and drawing, can be utilized. Sometimes these 3 hours can be long, so breaks will be offered and patients are welcome to bring snacks with them if needed.
*Previous evaluations, medical records, and a child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan can be reviewed with your consent. Documents such as previous evaluations and school accommodations are beneficial to bring during your first initial clinical interview.
A few weeks after the final testing session, a feedback session will be conducted. During this time, our Licensed Clinical Psychologist will go over the psychological assessment results and recommendations. With written consent, we can provide your therapist or medical provider with a copy of the final written report.
